AP govt set to adopt AI for governance transformation

Vijayawada: Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday said that Andhra Pradesh is about to enter a new era of governance powered by artificial intelligence (AI), which prioritises smart systems, human-centric solutions, and real-time delivery of services. While upgrading to the new age technologies, Naidu called for humane approach in problem solving and addressing the issues of people.

Naidu chaired the two-day workshop on artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), specifically designed for senior and mid-level bureaucrats. The heads of departments, principal secretaries and special chief secretaries to govt participated in the workshop. The objective of the workshop was to equip officials with comprehensive insights into AI’s potential in governance and digital transformative strategies.

Naidu observed that despite having best brains in Indian bureaucracy, our systems are making them inefficient.”By rewriting the archaic laws and embracing technology we must build systems which empower governance,” he said.The chief minister observed that with the advent of modern technologies, there is no need for hard work.”We have to learn to work smart by efficient use of technologies. Every department should develop AI champions who can identify and lead the adoption of use cases,” he said.Earlier, R Chandrasekhar, former Secretary, MEITY and DOT, spoke on the role of AI and technology in governance and said that resolving problems faced by people requires vision and bureaucratic will.

“With AI integration, healthcare expenses can be reduced by 50% and agriculture input costs, by 25%, while creating employment opportunities,” he said, adding, there is huge scope for drone technology in agriculture as penetration in India is less than 1% compared to 80% in China.The two-day workshop on ‘AI and emerging technologies for govt digital transformation’ was held in Amaravati in collaboration with the Wadhwani Centre for Government Digital Transformation (WGDT). The CEO of WGDT, Prakash Kumar showcased several innovative case studies on AI tools.The Nipun-AI tool for improving foundational literacy and numeracy in school children, developed for Uttar Pradesh govt, leverages Google technology to listen to children reading aloud and provides feedback on pronunciation.
