They launched Health Chakra, focusing on providing practice management software for doctors. This software was designed to help doctors with tasks like e-prescriptions, appointment scheduling, and patient records. However, despite spending 15 months building and testing the product, they struggled with adoption. Doctors found the software difficult to use, and the benefits were not clear to them. Eventually, they realized the original idea wouldn’t work, but they gained valuable insights that would shape their future ventures.

Pivot to Healthcart (2011)

In 2012, they launched Healthcart Plus, an app that provided information about medicines and their generic alternatives. This was launched just around the time of an episode of Satyamev Jayate, where Aamir Khan highlighted the high costs of medicines in India and encouraged people to consider generics. This episode raised awareness about the affordability of generic medicines, and as a result, Healthcart Plus became an instant hit. Within three days of the launch, the app achieved 300,000 downloads. This event helped Prashant and Samir realize that there was an opportunity to pivot again, this time towards an e-pharmacy business. By 2015, Healthcart Plus was rebranded to 1MG, and they started selling medicines directly to consumers.

From Healthcart to MuscleBlaze and More

Ashish: Three main reasons:

Cultural relevance –

understanding local preferences.

Hyper-local distribution –

strong retailer relationships.

Better value for money –

more quantity or quality at the same price.

Consumer Behaviour & Pricing Nuances

Healthcart initially started as a broad-based e-commerce platform selling various health products, including baby care items and personal care products. However, they quickly realized that their value proposition was strongest in the performance supplements category, due to concerns around authenticity and quality. Healthcart’s focus shifted entirely to selling genuine nutrition supplements, and the brand MuscleBlaze was launched in 2012. The brand took off quickly, and Healthcart became more specialized in the D2C (Direct-to-Consumer) space, particularly in the fitness and supplements market.

Fundraising and Early Struggles

During the Health Chakra phase, Prashant and Samir did not raise external funding initially because they were not confident in the business model. They wanted to ensure the concept was viable before seeking investors. After pivoting to Healthcart and being more certain about the direction of the business, they began raising funds. Investors, many of whom had shown interest during the Health Chakra days, were eager to back the new venture. The first round of funding came relatively easily, thanks to their pedigree and the strong potential they saw in the health e-commerce space. Over the years, 1MG raised around 12-13 rounds of funding, totaling an estimated $300-500 million.

Navigating Through Setbacks and Gaining Confidence

Despite initial setbacks, Prashant and Samir remained confident in their vision. They faced many moments of doubt, especially when comparing their progress to their friends who had secured high-paying jobs in other sectors. However, they stayed focused on their mission and made quick pivots whenever necessary. Their partnership was crucial during tough times, as they would support each other during moments of uncertainty. The key lesson they learned was that entrepreneurship is a journey full of ups and downs, and it’s essential to stay grounded and pragmatic, especially when things aren’t going as planned.

Entrepreneurial Advice and Thoughts on Market Risk and AI

Prashant shares valuable advice for aspiring entrepreneurs, emphasizing the importance of understanding the type of risk a business is facing. He identifies three main types of risk: market risk, execution risk, and competitive capital risk. For market risk, entrepreneurs need to understand whether the market is ready or if they’re too early. Execution risk involves refining the business model and finding the right channel, which is worth persisting through. Competitive capital risk occurs when competition has raised substantial capital, making it difficult for smaller players to survive. He also touches on the role of AI, stating that it can disrupt many industries, including e-commerce and healthcare, by providing more efficient processes and personalized customer experiences.

The Tata Acquisition and Future Vision

In 2022, 1MG was acquired by Tata Group, but Prashant continued to lead the company. He shares that the partnership with Tata was driven by aligned values and a shared long-term vision for the company. The acquisition was not an end, but rather a milestone that provided resources and leverage to build a significant healthcare company. Prashant’s mission is not yet over, and he is focused on making 1MG profitable and sustainable. He is deeply invested in the future of healthcare, believing that the industry is ripe for disruption, and sees great potential in continuing to grow 1MG with Tata’s backing.

["post-45304","podcast","type-podcast","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
["GET
